Tomra is leading the move to a circular economy

4 min read 17 Nov 23

Tomra is a scanning technology company focused on the circular economy. It is the largest global supplier of reverse-vending machines for container collection, and scanning machines for waste sorting and recycling.

Why do we invest?

Currently, we produce 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, of which less than 10% is recycled. Tomra’s technology can play a key role in tackling the problem, by making the collection and sorting of plastic packaging more convenient for end-users, and more efficient for waste processors. Higher recycling rates mean that less plastic ends up in the ocean or landfill, while reducing reliance on the emissions-intensive production of virgin plastic.

What is their impact?

Tomra’s innovations, particularly in the field of scanning technology, have driven significant improvements in the collection and recycling of packaging. The company was founded on the invention of the world’s first reverse vending machine, which allows customers to return used beverage containers and other packaging. A scanner in the machine identifies the packaging, and verifies that a deposit should be returned to the user, if it is eligible under a DRS (Deposit Return Scheme). Tomra also supplies waste sorting equipment to waste management companies.
