Alihealth is a leader in improving access to medicines

3 min read 28 Jul 21

Alihealth is a leading online retailer of medical prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines in China. Leveraging parent group Alibaba’s online sales platform, the company sells and delivers pharmaceutical products to patients, and also connects them to pharmacies. By enabling the Chinese population to conveniently buy medicines they need, Alihealth reduces demand on a strained hospital system.

Why do we invest?

Alihealth has established a large share of the fast-growing online retail pharmacy market in the world’s second-largest economy. Through its own online stores, the company sells and distributes medicines and pharmaceutical products directly to patients. Partnerships with pharmacies enable an all-day 30-minute drug delivery service in 24 Chinese cities, and a 60-minute service in 200. It also offers an online pharmaceutical marketplace that connects third-party merchants to more than 250 million consumers, for which it earns commission. With trust crucial when it comes to buying medicines, we believe the Alibaba brand is an asset.

What is their impact?

Alihealth is a leader in addressing inequalities in access to medicines. Through its software-based solutions, the company helps patients overcome China’s patchy primary healthcare network. By enabling people to order their medical prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines for delivery or click-and-collect at local pharmacies, Alihealth increases the efficiency of the healthcare system and helps improve patients’ adherence with drug regimens.

By widening access to safe and quality affordable essential medicines, Alihealth contributes to the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 – ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.
