Elia’s mission is to decarbonize the grid, whilst providing reliable power. Elia maintains and expands high-voltage electrical transmission systems in Belgium and East Germany, supplying power to 30 million people in the regions. The company also has a joint venture with the UK’s National Grid, maintaining a 1-gigawatt subsea cable that allows power trading between the UK and Belgium.

Why do we invest?

Companies like Elia will play a key role in the transition to clean energy, both by maintaining existing assets and building new grid infrastructure. The company monitors the grid to identify areas of strategic investment in the network, working with regulators to develop multi-year investment plans. The company’s current investment programme, out to 2027, entails investment of up to €15.9 billion, to strengthen the grid to accept more renewable power and to integrate new renewable projects. In 2022 alone, Elia commissioned 324 km of new power lines.

What is their impact?

Elia’s work will be essential for Belgium and Germany’s contributions towards the EU’s 2030 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55%. Although the company does not build renewable power facilities itself, Elia plays an essential part by either directly connecting new renewable projects, or modernising the grid to accept more renewables. . In 2022, 58% of Elia's connected power capacity was renewable.

Maintains over 20,000 km of high-voltage cabling, servicing 30 million end-users.
