Rockwool’s innovative insulation enables climate action

Rockwool is the largest maker of fire-resistant stone wool insulation for buildings. Made by spinning molten rock into wool, this material is, over its useful life, a more carbon-efficient alternative to plastic foam and glass wool insulation. The company also applies its stone wool technology to ceilings, cladding, horticulture and water management.

Why do we invest?

Rockwool is well-positioned to meet growing demand for more sustainable, energy efficient and fire-resistant buildings. Its advanced technology differentiates it from competitors. While less-costly plastic foam and glass wool alternatives dominate the market for insulation materials, the better insulation qualities of stone wool mean it can be more cost-effective in the long run. The market for new and retrofitted building insulation is vast, with particular opportunities for stone wool products in underpenetrated markets like the US and UK.

What is their impact?

Rockwool’s green technology enables others to deliver climate action. Stone wool insulation significantly reduces the need for heating in homes and offices, and so lowers energy consumption. Being able to withstand ultra-high temperatures means stone wool insulation is also fire resistant, improving buildings’ resilience to climate risks. Over the life of its building insulation, up to 100 times as much carbon can be saved as emitted in its production.

By driving greater energy efficiency in buildings, Rockwool contributes to the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 – making cities and communities sustainable.
