Sustainability and impact investing

As an active manager, we aim to make a positive impact and generate long-term sustainable returns for our clients. We have pioneered a range of innovative sustainable and impact investment solutions offering strong alignment with the core values of our clients and their objectives.

Investing for a more sustainable future

Now, more than ever, capital is needed at scale to advance market-based solutions to make an impact on the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges. Through our growing sustainable and impact investing capabilities, we aim to have a positive effect, or reduce negative effects, on the environment and society. At the same time, we seek good long-term financial returns, by investing across a broad range of asset classes, asset types and sustainability themes.

We assess the impact of potential sustainable investments against robust frameworks and employ a rigorous and thorough selection process when building portfolios. Our diverse range of sustainable and impact investment strategies aim to generate long-term returns by explicitly targeting sustainability outcomes. For example, by investing in opportunities that can accelerate the clean energy transition, break down barriers to financial inclusion and develop environmentally sustainable buildings that are fit for the future, we can contribute towards tackling global challenges such as climate change, poverty and inequality. These strategies are equally committed to actively engaging with companies, borrowers, and issuers on various ESG and sustainability issues, pushing for greater disclosure, and increasingly, to bring about positive change over the long term.

The aim of this strategy is to make long-term investments in companies from around the world that aim to generate a positive social and/or environmental impact alongside a financial return.

This is a concentrated portfolio, generally holding around 30 stocks, focusing on three categories of impactful companies – ‘pioneers’, ‘leaders’ and ‘enablers’ – to provide diversification across industries and maturity of business models.

The Positive Impact team undertakes a ‘triple i’ approach to identifying impactful investments, analysing the investment quality, intentionality and impact of a company to assess its suitability.

Once approved by the team, we can then invest in these companies when the timing and price are right. We embrace the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework and invest in companies focused on six key areas – three environmental and three social – mapped against the SDGs.

Both sustainability and impact considerations are fundamental in determining our investment universe and assessing business models, while engagement with companies is a key element of the investment strategy.

The value of investments will fluctuate, which will cause prices to fall as well as rise and investors may not get back the original amount they invested. There is no guarantee the objective will be achieved. While we support the UN SDGs, we are not associated with the UN and our funds are not endorsed by them. This approach to impact investing targets investment in projects and companies that make a positive contribution across a range of environmental and social issues, so their capital can contribute to creating sustainable, resilient and inclusive economies and societies.

This strategy provides one of the first opportunities within leveraged finance to gain exposure to best-in-class companies from an environmental, social and governance (ESG) perspective.
