Our heritage has helped shape us today, and we're now one of the largest financial advice providers in the UK.
Our roots stretch back for more than 175 years when Prudential was established in 1848. Five agents were on a mission to provide workers with more financial flexibility and stability. By the mid-nineteenth century, the industrial revolution in Britain was at its height, increasing employment as the economy grew.
However, 80% of non-professional working households lacked savings to sustain the family for more than one month without income. Prudential began offering workers ‘Industrial Insurance’ with premiums starting at 1 penny.
By 1900, a third of adults in the UK had Prudential Life Assurance policies.
M&G Investments was established in 1900, by an American Engineering company. They funded major construction projects that built our economy, including parts of the London Underground.
Towards the end of the First World War, M&G was bought by a London employee, George Booth. He launched the first unit trust fund in the UK, inspired by mutual funds in America. For the first time ever in Europe, people were allowed to pool their money together to invest in blue-chip companies.
In 1954, they introduced the Thrift Plan which enabled ordinary people to make monthly contributions to an investment pot – something that until then, only the wealthiest could afford to do. By 1998, British society had entrusted £21bn to M&G.
In 1999, M&G joined the Prudential family.
The M&G plc’s family of brands unites a huge range of investment expertise, experience and capabilities to serve our customers in 38 offices around the world. Our aim since the very start has been to help ‘everyday’ people maximise their wealth and we are continuing this mission today.
M&G plc has £346.1 billion assets under management (as at June 2024) and serves over 4.6 million customers.
