Helping families

Families come in all shapes and sizes and we believe all parents deserve the same opportunity to spend time with their new arrival. If you’re becoming a parent, whether that’s through surrogacy, you/your partner giving birth or adoption, you’ll get an equal amount of paid parental leave to care for your child. And if you’re already a parent, there are other types of family leave available too.

On 11 November 2018 my son was born. My wife and I were absolutely delighted to have a healthy boy and we took him home ready to start our life as a family. I remember the night before I had to go back to work being one of the hardest points in our relationship. I wasn’t ready to leave my new baby, and my wife wasn’t ready to look after him all on her own. After returning to work, I realised how hard managing work and baby duties can be, and I certainly wanted to do more at home to make sure I got enough time to bond closely with my son in that first vital year. I’d often miss his bedtime if I got caught in traffic or in a meeting. Thankfully, I’ve been able to balance this by taking a few months off over the summer as shared paternity leave. This is a substantial amount of time that I can spend with my family and to focus all my attention on being a dad. It also gives my wife more time to return to her normal social and work life. My manager and the rest of my team have been completely supportive and are genuinely pleased for me, which has made this decision a lot easier. I will go off excited about the opportunity and not worrying about work back in the office, which is great peace of mind. It’s just a shame he wasn’t born last year, as it was a cracking World Cup.
