At M&G our social purpose is to build inclusive and resilient communities through urban regeneration, economic empowerment, and community building.

Breaking barriers, building futures is the global flagship programme that describes our social mobility goal and we want to use community investment to help break down the barriers that prevent people from living the life they want.

We have three strategic pillars: urban regeneration, economic empowerment, and community building. Through our partnerships under these themes we aim to nurture spaces and places that help people and nature thrive; give people the skills and opportunities to become financially secure; and build and strengthen relationships within and between communities.

Within each theme we have flagship international charity partnerships to help us deliver our goals as well as providing opportunities to engage colleagues in all our locations across the world.

We establish long-term relationships with our charity partners to improve lives, build communities and provide support, not only through funding, but also with the experience and expertise of our colleagues. We ensure that the projects we support are sustainable and we work closely with our partners to ensure that our programmes continuously improve.

M&G in the Community Fund

The M&G in the Community Fund supports local causes and projects that benefit the community with funding grants between £500 to £5,000 (or equivalent in local currency) per project.

We fund a diverse range of projects and we welcome applications from charity groups internationally where M&G plc operates.

This is a rolling programme where applications are accepted all year round, with funding decisions taken by M&G plc colleagues on a quarterly basis.

The Empowering Children Foundation, Poland

The ECF works towards making sure that all children have a safe childhood and are treated with respect offering services including psychological and legal help to abused children and their caregivers; and supporting and educating parents/caregivers in parenting without violence.

The Kind Kitchen, Scotland

The Kind Kitchen works to feed local communities and key workers with nutritious healthy meals, delivered by a pool of local caterers, and support small independent Scottish food businesses who are struggling with little or no income.

El Shaddai Charitable Trust, India

El Shaddai supports schools across Goa, and runs outreach programmes in slum areas. Their programmes aim to empower women in areas of reproductive health, family planning, the dangers of child marriage and the rights of the girl child. They work with families in slums areas to create awareness and bring about change in their lives.

We have established an operating model for Corporate Responsibility (CR) across M&G plc which provides guidance to support each office and market to manage charitable activities within the framework of a consistent, business-wide approach.

CR Governance Committee

A CR Governance Committee is in place, with senior management representation, which oversees community investment activity and agrees strategy and spend. The Group Executive Committee and the Board review the CR strategy and performance on an annual basis.

Corporate Responsibility team

The M&G plc CR team manages activities across the business: devising community investment initiatives, measuring impact and spend, tracking performance against annual competitor benchmarking, as well as refining issues of key social importance to the business and determining where the business can have the greatest social impact.
